| I was discussing all of this recently with my Texas-based pal Abby, who surprised me by saying, "Oh, I know of another Lukas product -- I'll send some to you." A week or so later, I was the proud owner of an assortment of Dork Fruit Chews, a taffy-like candy marketed by a Pennsylvania firm called Lukas Confections. Here at least they got the spelling right, but there was another problem: Who wants to be associated with something called a Dork? |
| Curious to learn more, I got on the phone and spoke with Lukas Confections prexy Robert R. Lukas (no relation), who couldn't recall seeing any other products bearing our name. As for Dorks, he said he launched them in 1992 and came up with the product name himself, inspired in part by Nerds, the popular fruit-flavored candy pellets. |
