Course: Level 3 Photography

Theme: Adolescences and Night life

Title of Work: How I See Them

My images show the reality of adolescences, no longer children but not yet adults . An age group commonly linked to trouble and corruption in society. However I’d like to feel that my images are a reflection of how wrong this perception can be. These people are just teenagers trying to live their best life under the bad name given to them by society.

Anna Wallace

I am a first-year Fashion Media and Promotion student who has been using the course as a platform to explore and expand on my areas of interest. Through extensive research and playful experimentation, I have been able to understand and engage with my interests from a new and exciting angle. I feel I have tackled the forever expanding realm of fashion from an abstracted point, focusing not only on garments but on everything else that goes into the mix of making fashion not just an item but an indelible experience that pushes and pulls on your emotions and senses. By allowing myself to free flow down a new creative pathway, it has also opened my eyes to the industry on a bigger scale. Gaining some first-hand experience along the way, through an internship at Burberry, I have been exposed to the potential career lines where my skills could flourish and develop further, only supplying me with more ideas on how to excitingly push fashion.

Bethany Ginn

I am a student at West Suffolk College. I am in my first year of Fashion Media and Promotion and I am currently studying how Fashion will look in the future. Throughout my first year I have been developing new skills in Photoshop and fashion photography and styling. These skills will help me get a place at University and eventually in the fashion industry. My main interest in the fashion industry is how styling is used in photoshoots. I am also passionate about making fast fashion more environmentally friendly.

I am a UK-based artist whose work is inspired by ideas surrounding the unconscious mind, though I tend to explore many themes, never truly sticking to one obsession. My main focus at the moment is mixed-media mark-making inspired by the paintings of artists such as Franz Kline and Jackson Pollock.

These images are work created during the foundation course at West Suffolk College, where I explored different concepts and ideas throughout various project briefs, creating unique outcomes in different mediums.

Bee Haven
From traditional to digital, this piece depicts the uncertainty of insecurity. As suggested by the title, this piece is made from a dot drawing of a bee which has been repeated to form a rather complex and elaborate design. The concept for this was that it would be made into a pillow that people would rest their head on - not knowing that they are resting on something which people fear and could harm them, questioning the idea of fear and comfort.
The Goat
Inspired by a letter by the crusader Anselm of Ribemont, this piece depicts a goat like beast, angrily staring, waiting for its time to come. This is part of a series called 'Children of Chaos' who are out to cause mischief and danger to those of the world. Little is known about these children besides that they thrive and survive off the fear and souls of the deceased.
Lonely God
Created through accidental marks, this illustration is of an alien creature, the Lonely God. It is suggested to have committed some atrocity due to the red implying danger and rage. The crestfallen look on its face suggesting a traumatizing experience which has led to its loneliness, being the last of its kind. Surrounded in darkness, this creature hides in fear that it may harm another.
Parasitism
A mixture of traditional and digital methods, this piece was created to depict an 'impossible edifice' as a host, being taken over by a parasite destroying what can and can't be. I chose these colours to represent levels in society – as the pink-purple stands for those with wealth being taken over by the toxic green.
Inferno Souls
Inspired by The Divine Comedy, specifically Dante's Inferno, these nine squares depict tortured souls within each of the 9 circles of hell – with writing displayed across them that are quotes displaying their crimes and punishments. This piece was created through avid studies of people in daily life, where I felt I was capturing something hidden in the individuals, each having their own secrets.
Language 67
This is a passage from Revelations in which I intended to convey a sense of confusion and diversity, through the different typefaces which represent different languages. If scattered they have no meaning, but whole you have something beautiful. These images would be played on a video, displayed via a projector on a moving bit of fabric to imply the sense of misunderstanding, not being able to clearly read the information, only truly seen when the world holds still and comes together.

Daniela Blagojevic

I am a first year Level 3 Fashion Media and Promotion student. This year I have been developing my skills, mostly in photography and graphic illustration by photographing set design imagery, editing them and creating graphic illustrations for print.

My main interests are photography, editing and graphic design because I think that they are some of the most important elements when it comes to branding and entering the industry.

In my free time, I love taking my work even further with editing my photos and creating collage outcomes.

This project has led me to start exploring digital illustration and start a graphic design online course. With the graphic illustrations I have made, I created some customised clothing and bags by heat pressing the designs onto them.

Daniella Brookes

I have been studying Fashion and Textiles at West Suffolk College, where I have focused on developing my skills and broadening my knowledge of both the fashion industry and garment construction in womenswear. During this time I have participated in a wide range of projects, entered the National Wool4School competition, been nominated for the M.A.R.S award in my first year and been involved in both the 'Vexed' and 'Japanese Culture' Exhibitions.

After learning about the negative impact the industry has on our planet, this has motivated me to be experimental with my choice of materials and revisit tradition techniques such as weaving to create garments with minimal to zero waste. During a collaboration with the company Stephen Walters & Sons (Sudbury Silk Mill), I began researching further into minimal waste design/pattern cutting and developed weaving skills which I continued to use in following projects. I was awarded 'Most innovative Design' for my final piece in this project.

The restrictions placed on my work due to the lockdown have been difficult, however I am embracing the idea of having to rethinking my approach. I intend to implement the problem-solving skills developed during this time in all work moving forward, eventually applying innovative ideology to my work in efforts to tackle wide world issues around sustainability.

Fashion has always played a significant role in my life, as it does for many others which is why I understand the necessity for sustainable garments should not mean that their beauty is compromised as a result. As I am evolving as a designer, I am understanding that it is important that my work is equally ethical, meaningful and desirable to a wide market. In order to progress to the next stage of my career, I will be continuing my education at Kingston University to study Fashion Promotion and Communication where I can learn to digitally reach consumers.

My plans for the long-term future involve building a brand which will operate in collaborations with a variety of charities and youth work programmes to support struggling communities, engage young people and unite them through Fashion and other creative outlets.

In the few years I have been on the Fashion and Textiles course at West Suffolk College I've been able to develop innovative pattern cutting skills such as subtraction cutting, Dekoboko and Jabari which has widened my knowledge of construction techniques, allowing me more creative freedom and detail in my fashion development. I want to take this exploration into higher level pattern cutting further, especially skills such as zero waste.

This is an important element of my clothing brand Misophonia, based on the concept of sourcing second-hand resources to help reduce fashion pollution and lessen the impact this has on destroying the environment and to also inspire others. Another area I aim to focus on is illustrations and mark making to develop my own style rather than just manipulate sourced imagery and produce a personal outcome with feeling. These skills I want to focus on and am progressing onto Art Foundation next year to develop this further.

Outside of college, working and creating my clothing line has opened up more paths and creative skills and helped me understand and learn about having a business within fashion design. Through social networking, I have been introduced to the creative journey of designers and creators with similar styles. I intend to only use second hand materials for this project as the focus of my clothing line is upcycling old garments and giving them a new life to reduce fashion pollution, this includes materials from charity shops and any second hand clothes off depop. I intend to improve as designer and make a full collection for my clothing line Misophonia Clothing. I want each piece to have a new life and tell a story within design features and illustrations.

Recently my clothing line instagram @misophonia.aa has began to grow more then ever opening more doors for me to get my work out there even more. I have ideas and plans to branch out and create a website in the future or to have people work for me to help me in the process. I look forward to the future and where my brand and my skills will take me and what I will be doing or would have learned in the next five years.

An Introduction to my Clothing Line 'Misophonia'
Misophonia was formed in 2018, combining my interest in up-cycled garments and passion for art. The brand is a representation of my exploration through surface design, textile manipulation and construction. Misophonia is still in its early stages, my time has been spent developing logos, building a social media following and establishing my brand identity.
An Introduction to my Brand purpose
Having experimented with different textiles I have decided to work exclusively with denim. It has many appealing properties such as being easy to sew, having a long-life span, being durable and easily dyed/altered. In repurposing old denim, particularly recycled pairs of jeans I am creating wearable items that positively provide a solution to clothing waste. I am heavily inspired by the effect landfills full of unwanted textiles impact our planet.
An Introduction to my Creative process.
My creative process is random, I don't like to pre-plan. I like to focus on enhancing the good features of the jeans I am given/able to source. Being inspired by the original garment and creating something in an organic, creative and openminded manner. This process allows me to create pieces which are exclusive and one of a kind. The Misophonia objective is to give unwanted items of clothing a new lease of life preventing wastefulness of denim which has a lot of longevity.
