Aadya Chachra

Hello! My name is Aadya and I'm excited to share one of my projects from SCAD's Industrial Design Program.

For me, Industrial design is a process of creating products which make a difference and make people happy. I like to design for the user and how they interact with the product.

My fascination with materials plays an important role in my projects. I am really interested in creating new relationships between form and function and material. I am looking to broaden my horizons by learning more about designing for social and sustainable purposes.

Let's talk about my project Hydralizer.

This project, is aimed at rural hospitals in India where proper sterilization processes are not performed causing unnecessary complications. To solve that, I designed the Hydralizer. It is a steam and UV light sterilizer which works without electricity and clean water supply.

Nearly 5 million Indians die each year due to poor quality healthcare. Either due to lack of untrained doctors or due to lack of clean surgical equipment. Poor care quality leads to more deaths than insufficient access to healthcare. Therefore, it is vital to increase the quality of healthcare by introducing sterilized surgical equipment leading to minimal complications.

Hope you enjoy scrolling through my project!

I am excited to see what the next chapter in life brings about!

When the pressures of development and globalization are met with the social realities of isolation, race, and economic inequality, how is a culture to be preserved? Through participatory design research, this 'Sensitizing Toolkit' aims to address that question. As part of my ongoing thesis, where I am researching the dichotomy between the Gullah Geechee culture and mainland culture on the Southeastern Atlantic coast to find out how the Gullah Geechee may preserve and nourish their expressions of culture in a time of transition, this toolkit explores how the Gullah Geechee see the future of their culture, leading to rich insights and innovative concepts. Rooted in five principles- vulnerability, authenticity, porosity, connectivity, and hybridity, the goal of this thesis and research approach is to understand how diverse cultures may generate some form of equitable reciprocity with a sense of self and place.

Sensitizing Toolkit Closed
The visual language used in designing the toolkit was influenced by the Gullah Geechee culture. The toolkits were made so that they could be delivered safely (following the quarantine guideline) and/or mailed to the participants.
Sensitizing Toolkit Open
Included in the Sensitizing Toolkit are a workbook, materials and tools for participants to creatively express their answers, and a cultural gift from my culture to theirs, held together by sting and a 'vulnerability card'.
Sensitizing Workbook
The Sensitizing Workbook is structured and designed as to not be leading and follows the five principles- vulnerability, authenticity, porosity, connectivity, and hybridity. It gives the participants a chance to reflect on their lived experiences and helps build empathy between designer and community members.
Sensitizing Workbook Spreads
Each section of the workbook focused on one principle. Questions and prompts were adapted from previously identified research questions with the formatting inspired from methodologies like Cultural Competency, Asset Based Community Development, and Generative Research.
Vulnerability Card
A vulnerability card helps the 'outside' designer become more transparent toward inside community members by sharing what it is they are doing as well as some possible shortcomings that he/she may possess.

UBUNTU is a digital app that provides a highly personalize support-building structure that builds the capacity and agency of historically marginalized communities form the grassroots level to the institutional level. The design reflects my thesis topic that focuses on African American women as agents of resilience for vulnerable communities in the face of climate change. As identified in my primary research, the one-way flow of power from institutions to communities results in restricted capacities for people at the grassroots, and a lack of trust of the institution within the communities. The UBUNT-U app incorporates a multidimensional approach that is practiced by African American women in the face of intersectionality, which can help them build resiliency between individuals and toward the institutional level. The interaction through the App further helps in building awareness and resiliency around the social impacts of climate change.

The Kujichagulia interaction within the App provides individual with different Sustainable Development goals under which they think their issue falls in. After selecting the goal they can fill in their issue and specific query they want to be answered after which they will be connected with an expert in the field to help them sort their issue.
Progress and Rewards
The profile of individuals provides them with the option to track the number of interactions they have had through the App and further unlock rewards of getting their story featured, consult number of experts at a time and get their profile featured as a influencer.
Sankofa- Sharing stories that change perspectives
The interaction within Sankofa helps individuals to share their issues with a huge community facing or resolving the same issue. The interaction provides features of creating a meeting or event, locating communities or individual within the ubuntu app family and join ongoing or upcoming meetings.
User Journey story board
The story board depicts the story of a stakeholder about how she might come across the app and discover its various features that will help her in directing her capabilities.
Theory U model
The model is used to depict the concept behind the design solution. It shows how the learnings and experiences of African American women making her resilient can be leveraged to change the institutional approach towards shifting the burden of climate change.
Ubuntu - personal purpose connected with universal purpose
The Ubuntu interaction within the app provides the accessibility to individuals from different categories of institution, connectors and communities to interact with each other and understand different levels of challenges faced by each other. This interaction helps build individual capacities and how they can direct their capabilities while working with individuals from other categories.

I have dedicated my life to consistently learning about design and have dreamed about turning this passion into a profession. My style of design contains marketing, management, engineering, and styling design methods. I personally believe that regardless of what is being designed, I can't only focus on art and design itself but should attempt to understand social and cultural contexts, technological enablers and economic realities so that the design may resonate deeply with end users.

My fundamental goal when designing is to create a product that is aesthetically pleasing, safe, futuristic and most important for the audience to appreciate its existence. When I exercise my design abilities, I always keep in mind that the finished product should express passion, love, desire or other strong positive emotions to effectively inspire and positively engage the user.

I believe the marriage of design and engineering is the key to improving the quality of life for people. My background primarily consists of a mix of mechanical design, manufacturable design, fine art, and industrial design experiences.

I've always thought crosswalks are annoying and that they make you wait too long. Now while there are many ways to tackle this issue, this was my solution for it. Given the situation with the pandemic and nobody wanting to touch anything, I thought this could be a stimulating experience for all pedestrians while they wait for the light to change color.

Behnam Haki

I am a recent Industrial Design graduate from the Savannah College of Art and Design, with a background in Sciences and Social Sciences. Industrial Design has allowed me to integrate my previous skills with my true passion for design.

What excites me about Industrial Design is that it covers a breadth of topics such as human behavior/psychology, science, and technology. Industrial Design requires a lot of collaboration with professionals from different disciplines – to me, collaboration makes Industrial Design even more exciting.

New challenges make me feel alive! Human beings have conflicting interests, and a challenge that I am particularly invested in is discovering where those interests intersect so as to create meaningful experiences.

As designers, we have been given a unique opportunity to improve lives. Hence, we have a responsibility for which we should be held accountable because our decisions directly impact the world we live in and the people we design for.

Senior Thesis
My senior project focused on the prevention of spinal cord injuries and concussions in motorcycle accidents. Feel free to say hi for more details on this project.
My supervisor for this project: Professor Craig Alun Smith

Dyna
Dyna is a record player that captures the dynamic nature of music in its form. Because of the desire for a more dynamic design, the form of the arm and the mechanism of the cartridge had to be redesigned. Instead of having a rotating platform, the arm will rotate around the central axis of the record. Consequently, the needle will have to move in a railing. This record player has Bluetooth speakers that have a preamp. The user also has the ability to place them anywhere they need.
My tasks for this project was:
To imagine that I work at a design consultancy that is hired by a client to come up with an innovative design. I chose BKID as the design consultancy and B&O as the client.
To analyze the market and identify an opportunity.
To combine the design language and values of the two companies in designing a new product.
Lagom
In this group project, we had to design a livable vehicle that simplifies and maintains everyday lifestyles. Contextually research ergonomic and user needs to maximize space. Address sustainable materials and manufacturing processes.

Caley Deann Brunner

Helping people help themselves, and the environment, through informed product design is my primary motivation in life.

Industrial design is one of the industries contributing to large amounts of unnecessary waste littering our planet. I was always taught if you want change to happen, do it yourself and get people to join you. My journey into Industrial design is to be that change I want to see in the world.

My senior project Olli is an attempt to teach children about sustainability and a circular economy. Olli encourages kids and their parents to think about the world in terms of material, rather than in terms of function, by having to find soft goods in their environment to fill their recycling sack. The design, playfully inspired by a flower, presented a unique market opportunity to assist children dealing with Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety, OCD, ADHD, or insomnia through the weighted petal blankets.
