Bridge #2811661 is an outdoor bench design featured in the Brooklyn Museum and Pratt Institute's annual graduation show. The bench's unusual name comes from the original serial number stamped on the material's surface. This project's design conveys the following themes: durability, sustainability, connectivity, sharing and -of course, comfort. Incorporating these themes, the bench utilizes the structural hallmarks of a bridge for technical inspiration.

Goals: Creating a structure that is both aesthetically and functionally unique.

To structurally withstand the elements, a metal bridge must be both stable and durable. This bench utilizes the best of several bridge design types to create a robust and visually striking piece of furniture.

Challenges: Constructing the bench with 0.1-inch metal.

Bridge #2811661 is solely constructed out of 0.1-inch cold roll carbon steel. Supporting the weight of several adults on a thin and malleable material provided a serious design hurdle. Utilizing cold roll steel's natural flexibility, Bridge #2811661's curved structure strategically spreads load-bearing weight across the bench, allowing a thin material to support hundreds of pounds.

Conceptually, bridges promote human connectivity and culture exchange. They span both a literal and a metaphorical gap. They unite us. I hope Bridge #2811661 brings people together to sit down, relax, and share a conversation.
