Drop is a product system, designed to empower glaucoma patients to self-administer preservative-free medication.
Harry Moorman
Open-angle glaucoma is a chronic condition affecting over 60million people worldwide. An increase of intraocular pressure causes damage to the optic nerve, resulting in irreversible vision loss. Topical eyedrops are commonly prescribed to manage the condition and prevent further vision loss, but numerous usability issues result in poor patient-drug relationships, affecting medication adherence.
Prescribed medication often contains preservatives to maintain medication sterility, but continued exposure to this preservative can cause Ocular Surface Disease over time. Preservative-free medications are available, but only in single-dose ampoules, which have a huge environmental impact. In addition, patients struggle to administer their eyedrops correctly; dexterity issues can result in difficulty aligning the nozzle above the eye, whilst varying dose sizes can lead to discrepancies regarding medication efficacy. Finally, healthcare-providers desire a way to track patient-specific medication adherence but are currently unable to do so.
Drop empowers glaucoma patients to self-administer preservative-free medication, whilst tracking device use and medication adherence.
The product streamlines the administration of ophthalmic medication, utilising the forehead as a rest increases stability and assists users to correctly align the nozzle above their eye. A simple squeeze actuation pumps a consistently sized dose of medication into the users eye, whilst smart technology tracks adherence and populates patient-specific healthcare records - supplying the healthcare-provider with important data. It capitalises on an untapped, growing market and brings real value to an infirm and in need user group.
