For Princess Traveller Studio, Mango developed new travel products on a continuous basis. As with most designs by Studio Mango, we aim to solve problems small and large by adding valuable features and user experiences.
In this case a personal annoyance of a Studio Mango team member was presented as a concept sketch to the client. The annoyance being losing or not knowing where you have left your flight ticket and passport during the numerous of checks while traveling. This is a stressful situation for most people, even without having to keep track of your documents and valuables.

Important aspects of the design needed to be: clear indications for use, ergonomics, safety and not add too much production costs to the suitcase. The scribble was updated into neat concept sketches. Out of these sketches several design directions were chosen to be developed into prototypes; starting with cardboard and finally 3D-printed. The prototypes were presented to frequent travelers and thoroughly tested in the field for possible improvements. After analyzing the information, some changes had to be made and tested again before the engineering for manufacturing could be done. After 2 years of work the Safety Handle had its market introduction in 2018 in the Princess Baltimore and Boston collections and won a Red Dot design award.

Red dot for this?? Picture shows well: passport is about to fall from it. At least a mesh or fabric is needed to hold documents inside..
