In the life of a baby, the first stages are very short indeed. Normally clothes get outgrown almost right away, shoes for crawling still look brand new when you already have to change them for the next step up, and bottles and pacifiers generally only last 3 to 6 months. This is actually the case with pretty much all objects that surround our babies in their everyday lives, including toys.
This is the context from which Eco-Lecho was born, created and manufactured by industrial designer Fernando Palma Fanjul in collaboration with be.mammals, a company that creates products for babies. Both are located in ConcepciĆ³n city in the south of Chile.

Eco-Lecho it is a cradle built from 100% cardboard. It's been made to support the practice of co-sleeping, where the baby sleeps right next to his parents, safe and comfortable during the first 6 months of life or until the baby its able to sit or move by himself. The co-sleeping concept has been probed as a method with profound and positive outcomes for the babies and for the parents as well, including making midnight breast feeding easier and minimizing the probability of sudden death syndrome. It also helps parents recover some of their normal sleeping schedule, while embracing the baby's wellness and neuronal development.
Giving babies the chance to have the benefits of co-sleeping without any negative impact to the environment is another one of Eco-Lecho's main missions. It would be great if an object made to be used for only 6 to 9 months during a specific stage could disappear naturally or turn into recycled raw materials that can be used for new products, but many times that is not the case. Eco-Lecho diverges from the options available in a predominantly plastic market consisting of products that are unable to be reused in any way.
Eco-Lecho by be.mammals is made with 100% recycled cardboard and held together with natural corn-starch-based glues, preventing allergies or toxic agents to get in contact with our babies.
The design and materials used in Eco-Lecho are been conceived under the strictest safety standards. The crib itself is able to hold more than 60kg of weight, tightand safe straps are included to attach the crib to the bed, the cardboard material isliquid drop resistant, fire retardant and non-toxic materials
Assembly is simple. It's composed by two main parts (back and side), attached to each other through a very easy system of folds and fits that allow you to get it done in approximately two minutes. The kit comes folded in a thin waterproof packaging that allows easy and safe handling. The be.mammals Eco-Lecho weighs only 6 kg., no screws or tools are needed to the assembling and its shape and volume makes it easy to be transport.
