Moto Z² Play is the second generation Moto Z Play, the thinner, lighter, faster smartphone that transforms in a snap with Moto Mods. It's the most affordable phone compatible with the Moto MODs platform on the market in 2017. It has great specs for an incredible value, and the design is an enabler to most of the low cost architecture and the high perceived quality of the device.

I was lucky to be the design lead for this program at Motorola, working alongside with the engineering, marketing, product, supply chain and all cross-functional teams to deliver the phone to the market according to our targets and expectations.

Designed from Brazil, in partnership with our design studios in Chicago and China,Moto Z² Playis one of the coolest projects I've done in my career so far!

Design Story

The whole process (from first sketch to shipping the final phone to consumers) took around 12 months. We focused the efforts on designing a device that is built from just a single piece of aluminum, to end up with a stronger, more reliable, and easier to manufacture phone. That way, the company would be able to deliver it to a broader range of consumers than we did with the previous generation.

As a result, we designed a phone that raises the bar not only of the company but of the whole market on what can be achieved from a slab of aluminum at this tier.

The design is only 6.99 mm thin, 1 mm slimmer than the previous generation.Camera, processor, RAM memory where all increased to deliver a smoother experience for the consumers. And the attention to the details is evident all around, by the increased perceived quality, ergonomics, improved surface treatment and optimized software experience.

At less than 6 mm, the second generation is almost 15% thinner than the previous generation while still featuring a high capacity 3000 mAh battery for all day battery life.And if you ever find yourself in need of a mid-day charge, TurboPower charging give you a fast boost with up to 7 hours of power in just 15 minutes of charging.
