Duality, an exploration of how light can be revealed from within a solid object. The aim was to create a pure representation of this idea through a simplistic form with intuitive user interaction.

The rotation of the unit directly controls the intensity of the light. When the unit is open the light is at fully intensity and can then be dimmed to off as it is closed.

A frosted glass central column helps gently diffuse the light. Copper inlays add extra depth and warmth to the reflections. Matte porcelain external housing creates a striking juxtaposition with the intensity of the inside of lamp.

Design challenges arose in trying to create a simplistic external form whilst engineering a smooth opening mechanism to control the rotation.

Collaboration with UK base manufactures enabled the exploration of a range of material and processing options to retain the design intent.
