DESIGN X SABER is a project inspired by the iconic Star Wars lightsaber. It envisions what a saber would look like if Y Studios and our design heroes – Zaha Hadid, Charles and Ray Eames, Issey Miyake, Edith Heath and Dieter Rams - were behind the design.

The project is presented as a series of videos featuring the designers and includes a short documentary showcasing the design process behind the work.

DESIGN X SABER is a project by Y Studios, a design and research firm located in the creative hubs of San Francisco and Austin. It is the story of our two loves— Design and Star Wars. The project is a mashup of ideas inspired by our design heroes and our favorite sci-fi experience.

Designers are instinctively drawn to the scintillating world of science fiction and fantasy; it is our retreat from the real world, an indulgent to push the boundaries of our imagination, permitting us to be a kid again.As a cultural phenomenon, Star Wars is an enduring presence and has timeless appeal across generations, geography and gender. In this visionary universe, the lightsaber is a symbolic icon, an enchanting object destined to be reimagined by a designer.

Thinking about these inspirations presented Y Studios with the perfect opportunity to challenge ourselves with this quest:

What would a saber look like if some of our design heroes created them? What would our own saber look like?

DESIGN X SABER celebrates this groundbreaking spirit shared by our design heroes and Star Wars, as well as the quality of timelessness and endurance they embodied.
