The Andromeda Lighting Series is part sculpture and part lamp—intricately woven strings criss-cross around a wooden frame to create colorful geometric patterns inspired by mid-century modern lighting, string art and tensegrity structures.
Design by North For The Summer
We started by using an experimental design process where we had no specific product in mind but began building cardboard models based on geometric shapes. Once we were happy with those shapes we laser cut them to snap together without glue. We began stringing them as tensegrity sculptures and soon realized the shadow effects being created would make interesting lighting solutions. We further explored the potential within the structures by studying string art sculptures and lamps from the 50s and 60s. We worked on creating repeat patterns and refining the aesthetic with contrasting and complementary string colors.
The result is the Andromeda Lighting series, which consists of seven models including three table versions, three pendants and one floor lamp. The frame can be made of either hand-finished walnut or baltic birch. All of the Andromeda lamps come in our standard color palettes (Sky, Sunset, Seafoam, Forest & Midnight) but over 90 colors of string are available for customization. The floor and table lamps have a black, cloth-covered cord with an on/off toggle switch, while the pendants have a white, cloth-covered cord with a white metal ceiling rose.
