ORION is an interior lamp made using wood chippings, derived from the manufacturing processes, then pulverized and mixed with glue to become wood paste. This paste is molded into the arc-like shape of ORION. LED's are inset into the underside and the intensity of light can be changed by the user by sliding the weight on top.
The material that I used to create ORION, a wood paste, is the result of several tests to find the right balance between wood dust, glue, drying time and shape. For example, a wood powder too large, with too much liquid glue, creates cracks during the drying process that make the final product prone to breaking. Vice versa, a glue mixture that is too dry doesn't mix with the wood dust enough, and the final material is too brittle. After finding the right balance in the material, I simply looked up to the night sky to find the inspiration for the form: the moon. In order to create an interactive object, I added a cylindrical weight. By sliding it along the arc, you can easily vary the intensity of the light emitted, with the brightest light released when the weight is at the ends of the lamp.
