Designers often talk about bringing the outdoors in, which was the impetus for this design. I wanted to meld the sophistication of a finely crafted piece of furniture with the rough texture of the stone. The idea was to use the stone as a leg for the bench but have it peek through the top as the wood had grown around the stone. Critics have said that carving the wood to fit around the stone was a waste of time, and it would have been far easier to cut the top of the stone off and glue it on top of the bench. Implying that I should have adopted Deiter Ram's axiom "as little design as possible."
