Core77 reader Shion Ito, whose work we've featured before, writes that their latest project is "a new type of crayon that provokes us to rethink our perception of colors."
"LEAVES is a crayon set featuring hues like purple, red, orange, yellow, and yellow-green, drawing inspiration from the rich colors of leaves in nature.
When you look at color palettes in nature, they consist of blended hues, creating intricate and captivating colors that are different from straightforward classifications by humans.
With the advent of "convenient" coloring tools developed by our ancestors, many of us tend to view colors as everlasting. Yet, in essence, colors are compositions of various hues that can transform over time.
Inspired by this overlooked aspect of colors, Ito created crayons that blend multiple hues within each color."
Shion Ito: Product Designer, who has a passion for raising thought-provoking questions within society through the design of dairy product. His works have been awarded internationally including a playful desk partition, Forest(https://www.core77.com/projects/115717/Forest-primary-school-desk-partitions-to-help-students-with-attention-struggles)
Ito goes into greater depth: "this project originated from the insights of the book "Cosmic Tree" by Shinichi Takemura, exploring the intricate relationship between humans and plants. The author pointed out our conventional way of seeing color, emphasizing that colors are inherently dynamic and can transform over time. In contrast to the entrenched belief that colors are eternal and unchanging, the author contends that color, in its original essence, undergoes transformations.
I wanted to design a functional object that seamlessly integrates into people's everyday lives while symbolizing the often-overlooked dynamic nature of colors. In doing so, I aimed to subtly prompt individuals to reconsider their perceptions of colors in a non-obvious manner.
In the end, I decided to create a crayon that incorporates multiple hues within each color. To ensure usability, I carefully balanced the number of hues within a single color, allowing it to remain practical for drawing purposes.
Users might find it surprising as the crayons produce different hues randomly. However, this unpredictability is the essence of this product. In nature, nothing can be completely predictable.
The creation process involves using a specially designed plastic mold to cast melted crayons. Afterward, crayon fragments are added randomly, creating an intricate mixed color. Intentionally, I chose to give the crayons a rectangular form so that they can be aligned, creating a gradation effect when placed together.
There is no prescribed definition for how to use this crayon. I have intentionally left room for users to discover their own creative ways of using it. In fact, I even believe it is not necessary for users to use this product. As a designer, It is entirely acceptable to merely display it on your shelves. "
