The Client Dexcom, Inc is developing and marketing Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) systems for ambulatory use by people with diabetes and by healthcare providers for the treatment of people with diabetes. The company is the leader in transforming diabetes care and management by providing CGM technology to help patients and healthcare professionals better manage diabetes. No Fingersticks! Best. News. Ever” -Dexcom The Product Dexcom G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) System provides a real-time look at your glucose readings. It features a 10-day wear sensor designed to be water-resistant and easy to insert with an auto-applicator. The Dexcom G6 app then displays glucose information at a glance on your compatible smart device. The Challenge Helping Dexcom understand their diverse target consumer was viewed as a critical jumping-off point for the Speck team. This meant focusing first on the UI part of the equation to inform many of the design needs. The team discovered the end-users were made up of a much wider variety of users from young to old and even occasion-based needs. The challenge then became designing a product that could meet the needs of an older core demographic while still meeting the needs of a smaller, diverse, but no less important, sub-demo. Another challenge was designing a piece of medical equipment that was intuitive and easy to use in what are often chaotic user environments. The Process The Speck research and design team spent a significant amount of time doing user observations to understand the needs and the environment where monitors are used. This meant going beyond industrial design-- and into a place of empathy and understanding. Armed with a lot of observational data, Speck developed a UI for multiple devices that seamlessly work with the medical device to enhance the user experience. The Outcome Speck created a cohesive product experience from the application of the device to the continuous mo
