When I was studying GIS in the mid-80s we worked primarily on mainframe systems, writing our own code in Assembly, Basic and Fortran. The days of 8" floppy discs. One lab had a COLOUR monitor (it was a bit more than that) worth... $7000. We also got to work with the first (128k RAM, no HD) iMacs, with a mouse and GUI. We had 3½" floppies for those. A few years later they upgraded to a system with - get this - 100MB pullout hard drives. Whoa.
I designed our kitchen with Generic CADD on an Olivetti M21 "portable" - weighed 30lbs!
That had a 9" amber monochrome screen with a (for the time) hi-res screen of 640x400 pixels ...
