As industrial designer Michael DiTullo points out, BMW's classic, iconic grille…
…has in recent years evolved into something that can only be described as "whatever this is:"
Over the past few years, the designers on the Core77 Discussion Boards haven't been thrilled with the changes (see: "WHAT IS BMW DOING?") A rendering rescue was in order. Here DiTullo does what I wish they'd done in the original design studio:

I agree totally with the thinking behind this 'redesign project'. The new BMW front end looks like a bad copy or fake BMW from and unauthorised manufacturer! It hideous in my view. Overly complicated, out of proportion and vulgar. Is it aimed at non European markets where aesthetics are different? Very well done for addressing a question so vividly. Great graphics too. Thanks.
I'm sure I get the complaint of too many variants of the BMW face, but I don't think going back in time is correct either. You sound like someone that only loves the songs you heard in high school.
Design is all about change and evolution is generally good. Of course, form following function is still important. Design is contextual and follows and reveals technology. I think we have to let it happen.
The BMW i4 concept shown in the article is, to me, one of the better evolutions. An electric car does not need the grill. The latest i4 concept that just premiered with its big un-needed black grill is ridiculous and fails to tell viewers it motivated electrically or at least different from the ICE cars.
That said, I do appreciate your photoshopping skills and I appreciate complaining of all sorts.
And now it’s a Dodge Challenger.
I love the lights with the rectangle grill but the lower section just reminds me of the tesla model 3 smily face.
