I use a $10 solar light and charger for my bike light. It lives on my backpack in a clear plastic case ready for use at all times. It can also charge 3 volt appliances or charge small batteries. These things are made in mass commodity quantities now and will only become cheaper.
PS: I know a BU professor who has a pedal powered desk to run his computer.
