It's not clear whether the early Northern Russian structures depicted in this unknown Soviet painter's works* really existed, but they sure do draw the eye. With motifs that seem to overlap Native American, Egyptian, Mayan and Scandinavian design elements, the buildings look simultaneously old and fresh to the Western eye. [*Note: in the link the paintings are credited to Vsevolod Ivanov, but this is undoubtedly an error as Ivanov was a prominent Russian novelist.]
