This week Amazon revealed the new lifestyle device they've been working on, the Echo Show. By incorporating their Alexa digital assistant into something with a screen, they're hoping to create a new class of hands-free object that connects you both to the internet and to other people.
The demonstration video has an oddly 1950s-esque cast to it, depicting stereotypically perfect families engaged in the business of interpersonal familial activities:
The $230 device will be available in late June, and in a bid to sell them in pairs, they're knocking $100 off the total price if you buy two.

The design is awful :(
I'm always amazed by the vanilla all white family perfect TV sitcom setups for these ads. It makes the product mostly unappealing.
Hm... looks like a video communicator from 70s Star Trek... is this really the final design?
Sadly, I worry that this is the new normal; it does hew to the "form follows function" principle, as the only thing it needs to do is provide a screen at an angle and room for speakers. As we lose the need to physically manipulate objects, I'm guessing this is about the best we can expect (or that the average consumer will simply not care). In contrast an axe handle also follows the FFF rule, and is beautiful and organic as it needs to interact with human hands and perform a kinetic function.
Hopefully other manufacturers will be able to create devices that are both functional and at least relatively well designed.
Microsoft is set to announce a new platform for devices like these and they have multiple OEMs on board, hopefully one of them will create a truly beautiful interactive device.
Then Apple has been rumored to be creating something similar for some time, but at this point its starting to feel like vaporware.
