With NYC Design Week creeping up, we're sure to see an explosion of novel green ideas from many a designer, design company, and manufacturer. But what does "green" really mean?

If something's made of bamboo, sunflower seeds, or reclaimed materials, does it automatically get a green ribbon despite its functional capacity? If a design doesn't incorporate green materials or building practices, but is exceptionally usable and intelligent and lasts decades, can it be praised in the same vein?

Just in the nick of time, David Carlson of David Design and David Report and Amsterdam-based international designer/cultural nomad Satyendra Pakhale discuss what truly defines sustainable design.
