Every so often we get an email or a phone call from someone who would like to see more responses to the job he or she posted on Coroflot. Sure, factors like time of year, day of the week, or even time of day can definitely play a role in how many people see your job posting. But when you need to hire, you need to hire, and when it comes to posting jobs there are plenty of factors that you do have total control over. These factors can mean the difference between receiving one or one thousand responses, and believe it or not, most of them are easy to do.
To help you make sure your job posting receives the most amount of responses, we've put together a handful of simple suggestions you can use to make it look amazing. Some of these may seem painfully obvious, but trust us when we say each of them has been overlooked at some point.
This one is important. In fact, it's so important that we dedicated an entire blog post solely to talking about it. To sum it up, make sure you include a title (duh!), and keep the title between 25 and 40 characters total. Try to include relevant keywords and don't be afraid to get creative!
You would be surprised how many people make their job posting one big block of text with zero formatting. This looks sloppy and is overwhelming to the job seeker. We recommend sticking to a classic layout: a brief background on the company and what makes it unique, a summary of the position, responsibilities, and required technical skills. There are plenty of other things people include, but these are the most important if you are keeping it straightforward and concise.
If you want to attract the best talent, your job posting should reflect it. Avoid generic language and get creative. The more boring the job posting reads, the more boring the job sounds. Encourage people to apply by letting enthusiasm shine through - mention benefits and cool company perks. People should get excited about joining your team and not think they are going to be working in just another drab office.
Your boss may be breathing down your neck to get the job posting out there, or you may have a super tight hiring deadline. We've all been there, but trust us when we say it's not worth it to rush your job posting. Whether it's copied and pasted poorly, loaded with typos, or includes a bunch of sloppy long links, potential candidates may get scared away by a job posting that looks rushed. Take your time and make sure your posting is clean and presentable. It will pay off with the responses you get. This also brings us to the next point...
Trust us when we say it's never cool to be dumb, and there's nothing that makes you (or your company for that matter) look more dumb than poor grammar. Always proofread your job posting before it goes up, maybe even twice. We also know mistakes do happen, so if you do make one you can access your job posting through your Coroflot account at any time and make edits.
This may seem like a minor detail, but it has a major effect on the look of your job posting. Besides everything mentioned above, including your company logo can mean the difference between looking professional or looking like an amateur. When uploading a logo we recommend you size it at 220 x 220 pixels.
There are three different ways to allow people to apply for the job you post. Applying via email allows you to include a button with a direct email address. Applying via web allows you to link to a company website or an online application. The third option lets you add in a link and/or provide instructions about how to apply. Make sure that the instructions you provide are clear and relatively easy, as you want to make it so interested people can apply for the job with as few steps as possible.
If you want to increase the visibility of your job posting and give it a little extra oomph, we have three different tools. Think of them as upgrades to your job posting. From the Social Media Boost to the Bump to Top, each of our promotional tools is beneficial in its own way. You can learn more about these tools in our recent blog 'How to Maximize Your Job Posting'.
