Just a Guy Riding Around NYC on a Super Tall Bicycle

Maybe it's called a highcycle

I've seen this dude riding around several times, and here he starts off just a couple blocks from Core77 HQ in NYC.

Every time I see him zip past I'm filled with questions: How does he get on and off? How does he get this thing up the stairs to wherever he lives? What does he do at crosswalks since he can't put his foot down? Who made this? Has he ever crashed it? Here we got to see the dismount at least, and it appears he just weaves while waiting for lights, but the rest is a mystery.

As a cyclist, this video just makes me sad. This guy has no care for his safety or anyone else's. He seems to only ride opposing traffic. He weaves recklessly through pedestrians in an unpredictable manner (because he can't stop in a crowd). This guy's bike draws attention and then his actions set an example that causes people to hate cyclists even more. Cool bike, wrong-headed cyclist.

  That's a typical NYC cyclist. Pedestrians jay walk like they're playing frogger. But people are idiots regardless of their mode of transportation.

many years ago I bought my first welding setup and the first project I did was to build myself a tall bike. I'd seen them around town and had a few close up looks to know mostly what I was doing, but it still took a lot of improvising and trial & error to get it right.

riding a tall bike is really a wonderful experience - the commanding view of the road and landscape around you cannot be beat. I rode mine slow and roll-ey and quickly got the hang of mount & dismount, so the inevitable stops & starts became smooth and efficient despite having to get completely off of the bike to do so. I used a womens frame on top for more of a step-through for getting on & off, instead of having to swing a leg way around back or over a cross bar.

Far and away the most frequently asked question about tall bikes is "how do you get on? (or off)" and I always answered, "the same way you get down (or on), except in reverse."

I only ever wiped on it once - well into an evening of over-imbibery during my own bachelor party. ;)

You may have had this before but LA tall bike built for when they did a closed streets event. 14 feet to the seat. Almost taken out by a kite string at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJXXckWLc0E
