A small crowd gathered around ICFF booth #2319, donning free pairs of custom 3D glasses, to "ooh" and "aah" at the wallpaper on display: flowers popped, a birch forest appeared, and Viking ships sailed on a Scandinavian sea. On view for the first time at ICFF last weekend, DEEP is a new line of 3D wallpaper produced by Pratt Institute and design studio twenty2. The five available patterns, ranging from flowers in bloom to abstract folded textures, grew out of "Pattern and Ornament," a graduate interior design seminar taught at Pratt by visiting associate professor and architect Sarah Strauss.

"This is the first project I assign for graduate students," says Strauss. "It's about taking the idea of wallpaper which is a simple tile, then adding this three-dimensional aspect to it. They're actually shifting the plane, as well as trying to make the perfect match."

Strauss has taught the interactive studio for the last four years, inviting Kyra and Robertson Hartnett of twenty2 to mentor and critique her students along the way. The three collaborated on bringing the wallpaper to market, selecting five designs that fray the boundary between surface and sculptural space, and problematize the flat wall. Each pattern operates at a slightly different scale, meaning some look better close-up, and others from very far away. All can be appreciated with or without glasses (though with is a lot more fun), and it's easy to imagine these papers plastering a guest bathroom, or as an accent in an adventurous hotel—with a stash of 3D glasses waiting nearby.

"3D wallpaper takes something very familiar and asks it to behave differently," says Strauss. "By using wallpaper to make space out of flatness, we are creating a new interactive experience for the interior."
