At last month's Design Indaba conference we were charmed by the creative musings and sketches of the wonderfully bizarre artist Dominic Wilcox. During his presentation, he shared some of the ideas that came out of "Speed Creating," a 30-day project where he forced himself to invent something new each day, no matter how strange. The experiment yielded things like "Workercise," where bungie cords affixed to the desktop make it tough to type; a "Football Smoothie Maker," where your ingredients are smashed up inside of a soccer ball; "Hill Walking Shoes," which are pretty self-explanatory; "Onion Ring Fabric;" the list goes on and on.
Where does that kind of creativity come from? In an effort to find out, filmmaker Liam Saint-Pierre followed Wilcox around with a camera. The resultant short, which contains some hilarious ideas—look out for the "reverse bungie jumping" and hotel elevator—is well worth a watch:
Wilcox has also collected a series of his ideas and published them in a book called "Variations on Normal."
