Of the many technical skills an industrial designer must master, the first is sketching. And there's a reason why, as college freshman, we're thrown into Foundation courses alongside those who will go on to major in Illustration, Fashion Design or Animation; drawing is the bedrock of all of these arts.
That overlap is clear in The Twelve Principles of Animation, the commandments contained within the Bible that is The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation, a 576-page tome penned by Disney artists Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas in the early '80s. Animator Alan Becker has beautifully illustrated these twelve rules and posted them to YouTube. Have a look at the one below and see if this doesn't remind you of Industrial Design Drawing 101:
