Welcome to the age of active furniture. For Salone del Mobile 2015, MIT's Self-Assembly Lab is debuting a prototype for the first self-transforming table. A collaboration with the material manufacturer Wood-Skin, the table reconfigures itself from flat-pack to full-functionality straight out of the box without the need for human or machine intervention.

An embedded pre-stressed textile allows the table to be "programmed" for a dramatic unboxing, dynamically assuming a primary form. The table can also be reconfigured into other shapes or flattened again for storage.

The work of the Self-Assembly Lab explores self-assembling and programmable material technologies for application in manufacturing, construction, product assembly and performance. See two of their recent experiments in fluid self-assembly (a tiny chair!) and aerial assembly with balloons.
