Industrial designer John Truex has had a diverse client list, from Alessi to Calvin Klein, Dakota Jackson to Steinway. But several years ago he stepped off of the ID treadmill to take manufacturing into his own hands.
Truex began designing cast-iron cookware, and with partner Liz Seru started up Borough Furnace in Syracuse, New York. Truex runs the furnace on recycled vegetable oil, and even cooler, gets his iron by melting down old brake rotors!
Borough Furnace is the subject of the first episode of Anthony Bourdain's new web series, "Raw Craft." Watch Truex work his magic:
