We witnessed the debut of Schmidt Brothers cutlery at the International Home + Housewares Show back in 2012, when the New York City-based brand started gaining attention for their distinctive, thoughtfully designed kitchen knives. After all, their offerings hit a sweet spot between German quality, fresh form factors and finishes, and a reasonable pricepoint, and brothers Jordan and Jared Schmidt bring the same attention to detail to their magnetic knife blocks and packaging.
In their own words: Traditionally, families are centered on food and when they get together, everyone is taking part in cooking large meals. This family oriented aspect of cooking and food struck a chord with us. From the food in our grandparent's butcher shop to the decorations to the family gatherings, we wanted to bring all of this back to our cutlery...
...We were already involved in making housewares products on a private label. But we didn't want to keep making products that worked from the corporate standpoint rather than for the consumer. Our values of family, form, function, and practicality for everyone, were not part of these products. And how could we make something if we didn't stand by it? We felt that other consumers must be feeling this way too and desired a personal touch in their products. We sat down and started talking about our values. If we wanted to make our own brand, we wanted to incorporate them into everything from the products to the packaging. We wanted a product that could work for everyone.

Terrible products and even worse company. I have a knife that the black is flaking off, and they acknowledged it was defective, but then they went dark. They have not responded to e-mails, and never respond to voicemails. I have left a dozen messages - they Never ever answer the phones in the office - not even sure if they are still in the office and no one ever answers the phones. Terrible customer support for mediocre over priced products. Stay away and move on.
