With a little under three weeks left until the March 20th Core77 Design Awards deadline, we know you might need a little kick of motivation to enter, which you can do right here. Last week, we caught up with 2011 program winner Load Carrier for Labor to see how life was going post-Awards. This time around, we talked with 2013 Service Winners Museum In Our Street (MIOS). Make sure to submit your design before March 20!

How has MIOS grown since winning a Core77 Design Award? How has your professional life advanced since winning?

MIOS: We are fine tuning the release of MIOS as an open source toolkit, which can be reused and remixed under a creative commons license. In the meantime, the toolkit has been used in two additional Belgian cities—Turnhout and Genk—and several others have expressed their interest. Based on new key insights gained while using the kits in different contexts we have slightly redesigned it, making it even more simple and more visually outstanding in the urban landscape. Receiving a core77 award for our work has provided us with an excellent reference to point out our expertise within the domain of service design.

What have you been most proud of when it comes to your submission?

Besides having played with the Core77 award mold, knowing that our project has been seen and appreciated by so many people all over the world is something of which we are absolutely proud. Recently for example, it has been featured in the 7th Triennial for Design in Flanders "Conflict & Design," where the project was not only on display in the exhibition but also in the streets, where it truly belongs. Furthermore, we have received and continue to receive many messages of people enthusiastic about MIOS' ability to create social fabric, and therefore they are willing to deploy it in their own streets. It has enriched the perspective of many people regarding the meaning of design today and the roles it can fulfill in contemporary society shaping new tomorrows.

Have you created or taken on any new projects since the Design Awards?

We are constantly working on new projects within the area of design, for a broad range of customers. Both companies involved in MIOS (Studio Dott—previously known as Concrete—and Pantopicon) look forward to continue their collaboration on more such projects in the future.

If you had to choose one reason why other designers should enter the program, what would it be? What advice do you have for current entrants and young designers in general?

Core77 provides a very accessible awards program. It's a good platform to benchmark your design projects against an international audience. Our advice would be to pick a design challenge which is meaningful in the realm of contemporary society and tackle it with passionate humbleness aimed at shaping a positive future. In doing so, a thorough context analysis means so much more than a mere fancy design. Mastering the context before focusing on end results is a key success factor in identifying and creating a meaningful design intervention.
