Dror Benshetrit brings his quirky brand of innovation to a product area that sorely needs it: luggage. The new Dror for Tumi line, which has "TransForm Follows Function" as its tagline, consists of eight different pieces that cover every travel need you could possibly have. But as the tagline suggests, it's not the diversity of the line that's most impressive: It's the diversity within the bags themselves, which transform into different sizes and configurations. Check it out (the backpack in particular looks pretty awesome):
The line took 18 months of research and dev, with Dror drawing from his own personal travel experiences to inform the design.I was very inspired by the challenge of improving the traveling experience and bringing together style, elegance and performance within the design of our bags. I am always about adaptability and the non-static character of objects. I wanted to make these bags a transformative extension of ourselves; for instance the Dror for Tumi backpack can become a briefcase or a tote as you fold in or out the different optional handles.
I essentially set about designing for myself; I'm constantly on the go, carrying different things and switching modes of transportation--from an iPad to gym clothes, from the workday to the night out; between quick business trips and the all-too-rare vacation; in and out of airports, speeding cross town on my motorcycle. More than ever, we expect our products to fulfill all of our needs—simply, effortlessly and elegantly. Those that succeed become an indispensable extension of us and our lives.
The collection will debut in Milan next week.
