Jaguar Releases Sneak Peek of Forthcoming Hybrid Concept

Yesterday Jaguar released photographs, design sketches and technical specs for their C-X16 concept car, a two-seater hybrid that will be formally unveiled next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Design-wise the C-X16's exterior, at least from the A-pillars back, seems a bit Aston-Martinish to me, though I'm sure purists from both camps would argue. The interior takes cues from airplane interiors, and there's a neat if somewhat gimmicky experiential feature I'm keen to see:

In the same way that the exterior door handles are concealed until activated, a desire for ergonomic clarity means aspects of the interior remain 'secret until required'. Pushing the starter button initiates an aircraft-inspired starting sequence that powers up the hidden-until-lit displays in a cascade down the centre console. What looks at first sight like a TFT screen in front of the driver is revealed to be an elegant twin-dial instrument panel, a hallmark of Jaguar sports cars, hidden behind smoked glass.

Far from being pie-in-the-sky, DailyTech has deemed the C-X16 a "thinly veiled production model." "It wouldn't be too much of a trial to turn it into a production car," Jaguar's design director Ian Callum confirmed to AutoWeek. "I think it would be a fabulous production car. I hope we do it."

I have always had a love for Jag's concepts.. It's a #$#ing shame that up until 2010 that there cars have looked and felt outdated by about 20-30 years. Have you ever been in a 2008 jag?? The thing feels like a cheap pontiac from 1985 that only a grandmother could love.
