The "Reinventing the Toilet Challenge" we posted about yesterday reveals the difficulty of maintaining hygiene in rural areas where installing sewage infrastructure is impossible. Then there's the actual toilet itself: We use them every day, but I've never thought about how they're actually made, how many molds are required, and which production steps are done by machine versus done by hand. (We were also mystified by the video showing How Pencils are Made that we posted earlier this month!!)
Ceramics majors may find some of the production methods shown in the video below to be old hat, but for the rest of us, manufacturing a porcelain throne is quite the interesting multi-step process:
