With the intention of creating an experience where the public can be "moved to a sense of wonder through the particular phenomenon of luminous colour," the UK based Architects of Air, led by Alan Parkinson have created Luminaria.

Manufactured from a special PVC that has been custom made for the AOA, the Luminaria are inflated to create a series of linked chambers for visitors to explore. The walls are less than one millimeter thick, allowing daylight to create the breathtaking luminous colour experience.

Triaxial domes that draw on inspiration from Islamic architecture, Archimedean solids and Gothic cathedrals punctuate the journey through the Luminaria. These create psychedelic geometric patterns that add another visual dimension to an already mesmerizing experience.There are currently several Luminaria touring the world. "Miracoco" premiered in Annecy, France in July and is now in Lisbon, Portugal until the 13th of August.

Alongside the more antiquated influences there is surely a hint of Verner Panton's modern and also luminous Visiona 2 installation (below) created on the behalf of Bayer chemical company for the Cologne furniture fair in 1970.
