Used to be that design interns were seen but not heard. You wanted to make Cappellinis but you stood a better chance of making cappuccinos. It also used to be that most of your fellow ID interns were dudes.
But the times have changed. Check out Anna Frey, above, an ID major who graduated from Georgia Tech and is now interning at Porsche Cars. Frey's paint scheme design for a GT3 was selected for last Saturday's Porsche Carrera World Cup Race in Germany, and this was no "give the kid a shot" project; she beat out four pros who were also in the running.
"The opportunity to intern at Porsche has been very rewarding and exciting," Frey told Torque News. "And the thought of my design appearing on a Porsche race car in front of thousands of people—and (99) other Porsche race cars—is quite amazing!"

The red, white and blue thing is not appealing - have to agree. In any case, glad to see an intern getting some play. On the other hand, wish the ID field didn't expect interns to be treated like dirt in the first place. Who set that trend anyway? Clean a parking lot? Make coffee? Bite me.
I certainly agree with you on the established tradition of race livery, and most iconic livery is based on sponsor or manufacturer colors (Gulf, Martini, Rothmans, JPS, Red Bull, Lotus, McLaren, etc.), but from a design standpoint I would hope for something that would get away from the generic stripes and easy solutions found on most club racing cars. Especially if the concept is being put forth and backed by a group like Porsche.
It is obviously easy to sit behind my keyboard in my office and write this not knowing the parameters she had to work to, but regardless, It just seems like it lacks in creativity and sticks to a decades old layout. As gwags pointed out, I get a complete 'Evil Kinevil running for president' vibe from it. As a designer aren't you supposed to get away from the tried and true and take a risk to produce something original? (think Jeff Koons BMW Art Car)
Please don't think I'm 'hating', as it's tremendous for Anna to be in this position, just voicing my opinion on a blog dedicated to innovation, creativity, and design.
Given the incredible variety and creativity of race car livery, going with milque-toast variation on the Evel Knieval paint scheme with political-bumper-sticker flag treatment is underwhelming.
Keep at it, Anna!
Automotive race graphics is a pretty established tradition with not much room (if any) for break-through innovation. I find the design pretty classic and am sure it was chosen over many "louder" designs. I especially like the silver substitution for white in the "RW&B" theme since its on a white field.
For an intern that's very exciting and a congrats is owed, but in my opinion it seems like a 'give the kid a shot' situation.
Congratulations Anna!
