Making Sturdy Stuff Out of Plastic Sheets, Part 2: Flexcon's Everything Bins

I like to see a manufacturer wring every last drop out of a material, and a New Jersey company called Flexcon has bent corrugated plastic sheets into every kind of useful shape they could think of.

Flexcon makes hoppers, stackable hoppers, dividable containers, nesting containers, skinny containers, fat bins, bins with metal handles, fileboxes, the weirdest way I've ever seen to ship a baby, and more all using corrugated plastic sheets and the same crimping connection seen in the U.S. Postal Service bins.

They make a ton of shipping and storage supplies out of other materials too, and with clients like Toyota, UPS, Nike, Nissan, Canon, Oakley and Porsche, their products are apparently in high demand.

The first concern for designing something is the idea that it is easy to use, wide array of uses, flexibility and functional. The look comes in only second. And we should also be responsible in using and disposing plastics.

First! The manufacturing I imagine is cheap and easy; which is why plastic, is so popular in the first place. However, with all the hype, and the constant posts about green design; these products seem counter productive. I have used and seen corrugated plastic, and it definitely is not a "heirloom" kind of material. I can just see these boxes bending and fading over time, and eventually ending up in landfills. I don't think this is product is worthy of a Core 77 post, no matter who their clients are. I'm not impressed with the design either, the products look incredibly generic and cheap; is this supposed to be innovative?
