We here at Core77 have been pretty clear about our stance on plagiarism in the past. Today, our friends over at Unbeige flagged a new collection, "Tiffany Twist," from Tiffany & Co. With Mother's Day just around the corner, the company has been pushing the collection. But as Unbeige reports, "Several pieces in the line bear a striking resemblance to the work of Brooklyn-based designer Kiel Mead, whose "Forget Me Knot" collection of hand-cast rings, earrings, and necklaces debuted in 2005." I think Kiel's issue is competing with a global powerhouse like TIffany. If this design becomes a mainstay of T&Co. (through advertising, etc), *he* risks being perceived as the knockoff instead of vice-versa.

I think the deal (big or not) is that wouldn't one rather pay a lower price for the original? I understand people choosing to buy a knock off of a design because they can get it from Zara or White on White etc. at a lower price, but that is not the case in this instance.

Even if we disregard the fact that creative property infringement is almost impossible to prove in court, I still don'y see this as that big of a deal. Maybe if Kiel invented the idea of tying a string around your finger as a way of remembering something, but he didn't, he just had is cast in metal.

Kiel's is obviously a square knot, while Tiffany's is two-half-hitches. Totally different.
