Assembling (and Disassembling) the Eames Chair

Sometimes it's hard to believe that something as beautiful as an Eames chair gets bolted together, just like anything else. I always just pictured the Eameses going into a magic black booth, and later the curtain gets yanked up and the chair is just sitting there.

So it's illuminating to see how the Eames chair is manufactured over at Vitra. Well, not quite manufactured—we wanted to see the cool wood steaming/bending process, but the vid focuses more on assembly of the finished parts:

And for those of you that own one of these and need to take it apart for cleaning or repair, here's how that's done:

What a boring video. Once you show how one piece is done just go right on to the next different piece. Also, you don't need to place a sticker in the middle cushion, the top one already has one, you can't go wrong with that. And why does he take off the last to pieces? And why do they have to show him unscrewing all the screws? They take forever even in fastforward. The only point I see in this is to show how the whole chair assemblage was designed, and it's really a bore to watch.

Sorry to disappoint, but you won't find any steam in the production of the ply. Davidson Plyforms in Grand Rapids, Michigan bends the veneer in multi-ton presses with integrated induction heaters.
