It's common knowledge that moving is one of life's biggest stresses. So to think about packing all my furniture into a truck for a combined total weight of 7.5kg/16.5 pounds—the weight of a nice, single chair—is pretty exhilarating.
Amsterdam-based Studio Geneen has created a conceptual collection of airy furniture. The lightweight furniture construction "reduc[es] energy consumption during production and transport and of course, minimizes the amount of materials used in these products." Using high-tech textiles like Dyneema (gel-spun fiber), 3D printing and innovative construction techniques, the Light Room collection includes 2 chairs, a coffee table, stool and shelving unit. Read more about the specs for the Light Room collection after the jump and watch the video for inspiration for the "Gaudi Stool" below.
Dyneema Chair
In the Dyneema Chair a high-tech textile is used to reduce weight. The chair is based on the idea that textiles can be very effective when dealing with tensile forces since the forces can be uniformly dispersed over the whole fabric. The chair can be made totally out of one strong textile, like dyneema. A woven dyneema will be used for the side-arches because this fabric shouldn't stretch. For the comfort of the seating and backrest a elastic fabric is needed so here a knitted fabric will be used. Finally a dyneema-composite is used to form the solids that take compressive forces. Dyneema is an extremely strong fiber, developed by DSM, a company producing high-performance materials. (The chair weighs 1,5 kg)
Tensile Table
The tensile table has the shape of a stretched soap-film, it is made of silk and kevlar. By imitating the physics of a soap-film with an elastic knitted textile, and fixating the shape with a resin, a strong shape for a thin-shell structure is created. A soap-film always takes the shape in which forces are equally distributed over it's surface.
A knitted silk is used for the body of this table. The table-top is constructed of two layers of silk-composite with a kevlar-honeycomb in between, to create a strong an lightweight structure. (Weight; 2,0 kg)
Gridshelf
In the Gridshelf, deformations are counteracted by a diagonal grid of cables. A material dealing with tensional forces can be very thin compared to a material that has to withstand compressive forces, which in this case dramatically reduces the amount of materials used for constructing a shelf. It is made of Aluminum, glassfiber and dyneema-wires (600 gr.)
SLS-Chair
In this chair 3D printing techniques are used to manufacture a complex lightweight structure. The material is glass-filled nylon. The structure of the chair acts as a sandwich material and the 3D printing allows us to create a very open and airy product. (It weighs 2,5 kg)
Gaudi Stool
In this improved version of the Gaudi Stool, the top surface is constructed out of Dyneema-composite instead of carbonfiber.
Dyneema®,has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any man-made material in the world. On weight-to-weight base, it is up to 15 times stronger than steel. It is used in aviation and aerospace.(900 gr.)
