Oregon Manifest 2011 :: February Design/Build Chronicles

It's only been a few weeks since we helped to kick-off the Oregon Manifest Constructor's Design Challenge but we're excited to report that our three design x build teams are already asking big questions and putting in the research to lay the foundation for re-defining the modern utility bike. Read their February diary entries and learn more about the taxonomy of San Francisco bikes, cruising through the Farmer's Markets in Santa Cruz and inspiration from securing Thai curry to a bicycle.

The IDEO team sounds like the most well-informed group so far. Santa Cruz, Portland, and San Francisco don't have any problems with urban cycling, compared with other cities in the US. I know 'Manifest' is the Portlandia answer to the Handbuilt Bike Show, but I'm waiting to see how 'urban bike solutions' coming from the most bike-friendly town in the country, or the area with the most mellow climate, will be relevant to urban cycling challenges in, say, Las Vegas, Plano, or Indianapolis. Maybe the design studios will be able to get outside of their immediate comfy environments and propose 'global design thinking' bike solutions for cities that aren't so fortunate.
