Studio Olgoj Chorchoj's Back to the Childhood giant dining table installation.
Studio Olgoj Chorchoj were commissioned to create a new piece of work for the Liechtenstein's Museum's exhibition, 'Baroque Splendour and Stainless Steel. Table Culture with a Past and a Future' (see earlier post about Studio Makkink and Bey's Silver Sugar Spoon installation for this exhibit)
Their installation, Back to the Childhood, explores the feeling of what it might be like to be a child by displaying a wooden dining table with drinking glasses and other tableware enlarged to twice its size, thus creating a differentiation in scale which positions an adult at the vantage point of a six year old. As you walk up to the table you can just about see the objects on the table surface adding to the sense of remoteness and mystery.
As explained by Studio Olgoj Chorchoj :
We would like people to reexperience how they felt when they viewed an interior environment at the age of six, this being a very important phase in people's lives. One in which they started to attend school and readily absorb all the interests and influences like a sponge. It is also a time which promotes their individual perception of the aesthetic and material world.
The studio worked with a number of manufacturers to realise the range of glass and furniture products including Ardecco, Brokis, Jursa, and Vitrum.
The Czech based Studio Olgoj Chorchoj, was founded in 1990 by Michal Fronek (1966) and Jan Nemecek (1963) who were still studying at Academy of Arts in Prague. At the beginning the Studio's creativity stressed the use of technology and natural materials to create a wide range of work from light-generating ready-made objects, glass vases and titanium jewellery. Other works also include architectural projects and the design of interiors and reconstructions of historical objects and industrial buildings. Michal Fronek and Jan Nemecek are head of the atelier of design products at the Academy of Arts in Prague.
