Welcome to the first broadcast of Core77's Hand-Eye Supply Curiosity Club
5:30 to 6:30 pm PST (GMT+8)
Our first speaker Mark Tieszen has spent 7 years as a professional Telemark skier. Mark's transition from athlete to designer gives him a unique perspective on the relationship between the designer and user in the process of developing athletic equipment. As a professional skier and consultant, Mark worked extensively with Crispi, an Italian company on the forefront of Telemark Ski manufacturing and design. The talk will focus on his experience working on the NTN Telemark boot and binding and the struggles of innovating in a field that is entrenched in heritage and tradition. - - - -
About the Curiosity Club Ex Curiositas, Scientia. We pledge to learn with out prejudice in pursuit of our mutual goal; perpetual noviceship. We admit that it is impossible to know everything about anything and thus we remain perpetually curious and perpetually novice. The Hand-Eye Supply Curiosity Club meets fortnightly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30. Each meeting of the Hand-Eye Supply Curiosity Club will contain a 18-28 minute lecture from a speaker who has an area of knowledge that appeals to the curiosity club. The presentation will be videocast on the Core77 blog along with any presentation materials. The series highlights an eclectic group of speakers across a broad range of subjects dictated by our curatorial interests in the areas of Culture, Design, Science, Technology, Art, Fabrication and Design Techniques and Lost Common Knowledge.
The Hand-Eye Supply Curiosity Club is a speaker series hosted by Will Lolcama, Tobias Berblinger and Core77's Hand-Eye Supply store.
Fall Schedule
Oct. 19th Blake Van Roekel: Good Keuken Blake Van Roekel is the owner of Good Keuken and a co-founder of the successful and popular Art+Palate Supper Club. Her menus are inspired by art and design, literature and music resulting in meals that are thematic and unique to the time and place of the event. Her goal is to introduce greater levels of meaning to the food on our plates by not only stimulating our taste buds, but our emotions and intellect as well.
She serves on the board of the Portland chapter of Slow Food, teaches classes and is the consulting chef for Gales Meadow Farm, developing recipes while helping the vegetables grow. She is committed to the earth, her food, and the people she feeds.
Nov 2nd Erin Rose Gardner: The Opulent Project Opulent: amply or plentifully provided or fashioned often to the point of ostentation. TOP investigates opulence within the context of our society's obsession with material possessions. We seek to create a dialogue between the precious and non-precious and subvert mainstream preconceptions regarding value in material culture. To do so we are constantly questioning and considering where these ideologies originate and examining ways in which we may alter and intervene with this visual language. We value a conceptual approach to jewelry design that is rooted in a deep understanding of the making process.
Nov 16th Chance Walte: Fearless Guitars Chance Walte is a seeker, questioner and tireless experimenter. For more than twenty years he has utilized guitars and basses as the tools to study organized sound. During this process he recorded modifications to the tuning, setup and construction of the instruments at his disposal, using the same three songs for control. In this way, he became very familiar with the variables involved in sculpting a tone. Since the summer of 2005 Chance Walte has run a small, full-service shop called Fearless Guitars dedicated to high-quality gear and personal attention to customers' needs.
