The Eames Office has announced that October 10, 2010 marks the tenth annual Powers of Ten Day, in recognition of Charles and Ray Eames' 1977 film of the same name. The film and the day are all about celebrating the potential in adjusting perspective with scale, viewed from the beautiful natural order of math and science. As Eames Demetrios, the Eames' grandson and principal of the Eames Office, says, "There is a little bit of the numerologist in all of us, so we love celebrating this date, but empowering people to explore and make connections between scales is a year-round goal of ours." On October 10th, the Eames Office encourages people to participate by watching the film, sharing it with others, and starting conversations about the films' exponential journey through space and time, and how that can be applied to the way we view the world. During the Compostmodern Conference in '09, we wrote about how Demetrios applies this way of thinking to promote sustainability.
In further celebration of 10/10/10, the Eames Office is selling and donating the DVD Scale is the New Geography as well as a Powers of Ten box kit to help teachers lead workshops based in Powers of Ten thinking. Additionally, there is a Powers of Ten exhibition up at the Eames Office in Santa Monica, with events and activities each day in October.
