We just came across images of Leon Ransmeier's Bubble Bank, produced earlier this year with glassblower Andrew Hughes, and now on sale at Matter. The banks come in three sizes, are hand blown, and have to be broken to access the change. With a simple glass bubble, the bank both underlines and breaks piggy bank conventions—it's hyper-visual and spatial, with a thin membrane separating you from your savings, but also preciously made, protecting the collection from an early cash-out. As an object, it's beautiful, but as a piggy bank, it's serious.
At $200, it's unlikely that most people would ever crack the bank open, but we like imagining that we would (and all the cathartic, tremendous feelings that go along with it).
