Brent Price works as a financial planner, but he went to school for industrial design. So when the Colorado-based family man recently ran into a problem, he dusted off the old ID training to solve it--and wound up opening up another line of income for himself, by mass-marketing the resultant product.
Price and his family enjoy biking in the Colorado Rockies with their two dogs, but even with a big-ass pickup truck they found themselves unable to fit all of the bodies and gear for the trip. As anyone who's ever fully loaded a pickup truck bed can tell you, careful planning (vs. just throwing everything in the back) can double or even triple your storage space, but disassembling and reassembling the bicycles on each trip would be inconvenient. Instead Price devised a simple system of clamps, collectively called the Rec-Rac, that fastens to a pickup bed's sidewalls without having to drill holes. The system can securely hold bicycles in place, vertically, with no need for disassembly--and still leave plenty of room left over for gear. (For those familiar with photography and grip gear, the devices are similar to Superclamps.)
Price then completed the system by adding an optional component that secures a second bike to the one against the wall; with these in place as many as four bikes can be stowed.
There's an article on Price and the system here.
