In this second clip from NG's Ultimate Factories, a NYC subway car undergoes final assembly after being shipped from Brazil to Hornell, New York. Here you can see how the actual design of the cars plays an important role in minimizing the downtime of the vehicles during their neverending 24-7 service: The floors and HVAC units are all modular and quickly swappable, as opposed to the older system, whereby a damaged floor or air-conditioning unit would require the entire car be taken out of service (and in the case of the prior design of the flooring, every seat in the car had to be removed in order to fix it!).
One sobering fact clearly shown in the video--for any of you who have thought about kicking out the windows in an emergency, yeah, you can forget about it. Those windows ain't going anywhere.
