These items by design firm JPA Design are meant to make redeye flights more bearable (and sustainable).
JPA focused on the blankets handed out on long-haul flights. Their first aim was to do away with the plastic film they come wrapped in. Traditionally, airlines launder blankets between flights, then wrap them in plastic to signify to the flier that the blankets are "fresh," i.e. clean. JPA's solution is to bundle the blanket up like a bedroll; this rolled configuration, as with folded laundry, is meant to convey freshness.
Unfolding the blanket reveals the drawstring pocket that holds the pillow. There's an additional pocket—"fully enclosed," the firm says, whatever that means—designed specifically to fit a smartphone and keep it within reach. (The days when airplanes were a natural space to disconnect are long over.)
The blanket shown above is for Premium Economy. Business Class gets a quilted mattress topper tied with a bow—"inspired by global fashion elegance," the firm says--fitted with magnets that connect it to the seats.
The project was done in collaboration with PTP, a supplier of airline industry products, though no production plans have been announced.
