A Chinese company called XPhotonics has developed these Xlaserlab X1 machines. They're desktop laser welders that can also cut, clean, and remove rust.
They come in two flavors. The base-level $1,7000 X1 can be used with stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum sheets up to 2mm thick. This unit is primarily good for spot-welding.
The larger $2,500 X1 Pro can handle the materials above, along with galvanized steel, up to 3mm in thickness. This unit is designed for continuous operation.

Kickstarter backers have gone nuts for these things: At press time they'd racked up $1.8 million in pledges, with 37 days left to pledge. They expect to ship in April.

This is a joke right? Half the shots are of someone holding the workpiece ***being welded or cut*** with their bare hands, zero guards anywhere (the main danger of laser usage is deflection at the surface), etc.

Aa much as it like the idea of this, I'd rather wait till it ships and get the full reviews then (even if it means paying more). After having a crowd-funding campaign completely dissappear on me out of Hong Kong, I'm not willing to roll the dice again. I hope the team behind this delivers on their promises.
Agreed, crowdfunding is risky, you never know if a company has the means to follow through with their goals. but the general tech behind this solid and super exciting.
I saw a review of this product that certainly shows it's promise if they can deliver the same quality in production.
I saw that too - was pleased to see an unpolished, 'make-it-up-as you-go' review. I agree with the reviewer though, there's a strong chance it'll get banned. A handheld consumer device with that much power won't go unnoticed.
