When it comes to a true flying car—I don't mean just a VTOL vehicle, I mean something that can both drive and fly—we've seen a lot of wild forms over the years.
Notably, one that actually flew was the KleinVision Aircar, which had folding wings:
Another vehicle that successfully flew last year was the Samson Sky Switchblade.
However, Samson Sky reckons that in order to make the design production-ready, both the wings and the massive rear stabilizer, which contains the propellers, must be folded into the body for driving mode. So their latest design envisions this arrangement:
I hate to be skeptical, but gosh that looks like a lot of moving parts! I wonder what the maintenance will look like.

We are developing the 1st real Blade Runner Style flying car called Sky Chaser. It looks like a Can-AM race car and flies vertically and horizontally without any folding wings, by using it's body as a wing. It is also amphibian. A picture of it is in my ico. We currently have a working unmanned full scale prototype and are now developing the manned version in the UAE. For more information search Sky Chaser flying car and see our website: SkyChaser.se
We already have flying cars: they're called helicopters. They do literally everything people want out of flying cars, they just don't look like zeerust fantasy and are incredibly complex to fly.
Remember seeing images of the rotary powered Moller M400 Skycar back in the 80's..
There is no way I’m getting in one of these if it glides or autorotates like a brick. Besides, unless battery technology advances, I suspect they have ZERO payload after hauling around their own battery. The’ve been trying this fantasy since 1946; Molt Taylor’s Aerocar.
