In 2017, three friends in Germany attended a large camping trade fair, and came up with an outside-of-the-box-van idea:
"Why do so many people buy camping vehicles (99.5% diesel!) and then only use them for this one purpose for a few weeks a year? Why not quickly convert existing empty vans into camper vans when needed - and back again? In this way, commercial vehicles from everyday working life could also become the perfect camper at the weekend!"
The three men (Max Mueller, Jörg Kortmann and Florian Fey) subsequently invented the PlugVan concept and built a company around it. Their system is built around a freestanding module that one person can wheel over to an empty van, and slide inside, in the manner of a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. Once inside, the module then expands sideways to meet the walls of the van.
Their instant-camper-van concept proved successful, and they designed a version for shorter vans:
They also designed a mobile office version:
As well as modules aimed at tradespeople:
The units can be loaded by just one person, literally in minutes. This video shows the process more or less in real time:

As you can probably tell, the company founders have backgrounds in engineering, not ID. While the system works and is currently successful on the market, I think some of the touchpoints and processes could use the ministrations of an industrial designer.
